Programs help. A job does more than almost any program, because it comes with a schedule, a paycheck, and somebody who’ll answer a reference call.
You were going to pay somebody anyway. Just change who you call first.
Hire Them First
Yard work, the rental turn, the odd job you were going to post online — call a workforce ministry and hire someone rebuilding their life before you call anyone else.
What you'll need
- The number for a local workforce or reentry ministry
- The job, written out plainly, with the pay named up front
- Same-day or same-week payment, not net-30
What to say
I've got two days of work and I pay $20 an hour. Do you have someone in your program who wants it?
Pitfalls
- Pay the going rate. A discount job is a favor, and a favor doesn't build a resume.
- Be a real reference afterward. That's worth more than the check.
- Say what the job is and when it ends. Vague work with no end date is how people get taken advantage of.
