Everyone says “let me know if you need anything,” and everyone means it, and mostly nothing happens, because nobody wants to be the one organizing their own crisis. Willingness was never the shortage. Somebody willing to run the calendar is.
Be the One Who Starts the Meal Train
The day you hear the diagnosis, ask one yes-or-no permission question, then set up the meal train yourself — dates, drop-off rules, dietary notes — so twenty willing people have somewhere to sign.
What you'll need
- A free meal-train site or a shared spreadsheet
- One permission text to the family
- Ten minutes of recruiting in the group chats they're part of
What to say
"People are going to want to help you, and I'd like to organize it so you never have to think about it. Can I set up a meal calendar? You'll get one link and zero questions."
Pitfalls
- Ask once, then run it. The family should never manage their own rescue.
- Put the allergies, kid-friendliness, and porch-drop instructions in the signup so nobody texts them questions.
- Schedule meals two or three nights a week, not seven — fridges overflow, and the train should run long, not hot.
