Simple Questions to Ask Every Time You Open Your Bible

The difference between reading and studying the Bible involves two additional activities: asking questions of the text and writing down your insights.

Briefly summarize what you just read:

Who wrote this text and what do we know about them?

Who is the intended audience and what do we know about them?

What was going on at the time culturally and historically?

Which passage in this chapter jumped out to you? Why?

What is one passage that encourages or inspires you? Why?

What is one passage that challenges or convicts you? Why?

What is one passage that surprises or confuses you? Why?

What do you think is the key message of this chapter?

What does God want you to understand or believe?

Are there truths in this chapter that contradict ideas we hear in the world? If so, what are they?

How does this chapter connect to other parts of this book and the rest of the Bible?

What contrasts emerge between what this passage could have said and what it actually says β€” and what does that reveal about its central message?

How would embodying this truth impact you if you took it seriously?

How would it change your daily choices or interactions?

How would it change your thoughts or attitudes?

Why might God be showing this to you now?

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." β€” Psalm 119:105
